Hawaiian Music Collection - Digitization Procedures

Songs were digitized from original analog formats from the Hawaiian Music Collection located in the Sinclair Library Wong Audiovisual Center using the following equipment and software:
1. Technics/KAB Custom SL1200 2A with multiple styli
2. Elberg MD12 MK2 78rpm and RIAA Record Preamplifier
3. Motu UltraLite Audio Interface with Avid Pro Tools
4. Waves Restoration Bundle
5. M-Audio BX5A Studio Monitors with SBX Subwoofer
6. VPI-HW-17F Record Cleaner
7. Mac Pro Computer
8. Glyph 1TB External Hard Drive

Initial cleanup of the phonodiscs is performed with the VPI record cleaner. The signal is then run from the KAB SL1200 into the Elberg MD12 where EQ is applied before passing through the Motu. The digital sound file is recorded to the external hard drive via the Mac Pro with Pro Tools in a 24bit/96KHZ file configuration. The Waves restoration package is used to remove noise and other obtrusive sound (hiss, pop) before being saved to 128kbps MP3 files for online access.

If the Library is not able to immediately determine that it is permitted to use the work(s) in question, the Library will cease providing access to the work until or unless it can determine that such uses are permitted. The Library may work with the Legal Affairs and University General Counsel Office to make determinations about appropriate use. Depending on these determinations, the Library may restrict access to the work(s) in question or remove them from its systems. Removing the work(s) in question will result in the Library ceasing to provide long-term preservation resources to the digitized content. Parties who wish to contest the Library’s uses of specific works may, at their discretion, issue a DMCA take-down notice to the University’s Information Technology Services Information Security Officer.
