At the highest level of classification, we can say that all the languages are Austronesian. Chamorro, Palauan, and Yapese have only been classified as being outside the Oceanic subgroup of Austronesian. The other languages involved here belong to either of two distinct subgroups of Oceanic: Micronesian or Polynesian.Within the Oceanic Micronesian subgroup, the familiar problem of deciding between language and dialect confuses matters, particularly within the Trukic continuum. To minimize confusion, I have used the criterion of bibliographic transparency in naming languages. In other words, I have used language names that will facilitate finding references in such sources as theUniversity Press of Hawaii catalogue, even when more traditional criteria would favor listing two varieties as dialects of a single language.This classification is nearly the same as that presented in Bender 1971 (\"Micronesian Languages\" in Current Trends in Linguistics, vol. 8, ed. by T. A. Sebeok).
