Kilauea, live volcano, with its hissing, steaming firepit, Halemaumau, dominates the Ha¬waii National Park—grotesque and beautiful mem¬orial to Nature's elemental war.The 'round-the-island tour of Hawaii, embraces a visit to the volcano and a tour of the National Park. From Hilo (second city of the Islands) the route passes Rainbow Falls; \"tunnels\" through dense lehua and koa forests, fern jungles, fragrant ginger, and other tropical undergrowth; then emerges into a broad expanse of gnarled lava beds.Suddenly there flashes into view what appears to be a shining, black lake, covering 3,000 acres, and chimneyed by fissures from which wisps of vapor float—Kilauea! And soon, from the safe haven of Halemaumau's brim, one witnesses a cataclysm which few are privileged to see!The firepit, about three-fifths of a mile across, centers a main crater eight miles in circumference. Molten lava, during active periods, varies from a depth of several hundred feet to the \"overflow\" point at which it boils into the main crater, where it quickly hardens. Its activity, however, is spas¬modic. Fortunate are those who happen to arrive during a periodic (but harmless) display of Pele's pyrotechnics.Near the crater may be found such fantastic formations as Pele's Tears, olivines, and thread¬like lava known as Pele's Hair. Easily accessible are lava tubes, extinct craters, \"picture frames,\" bub¬bles and tree molds in long-cold lava.
