The strike is over issues  about how we students  get our education. Basically, the teachers are trying to improve conditions so that things  are a little better for both them and us.\\nThe Department of Education  (DOE) is the State agency against whom the teachers are struggling. The Hawaii State Teachers Association  (HSTA) represents the teachers. Two questions  are involved. The first is the right of the teachers to have an organization which represents them in their dealings with the DOE.  \"Teacher Power\" in other words. The second are these teacher demands to improve school conditions:\\n- Class sizes that work. \\n- Duty-free  lunch periods.\\n- Adequate professional salaries\\n- Enough counselors, nurses, librarians,\\n- Preparation periods for all teachers before classes.\\nBASIC ISSUE: WHO CONTROLS THE SCHOOLS?\\nThe demands seem reasonable to us.  But the DOE says that such things as class sizes  are their business, not the teachers. Same with the other issues. So the teachers  are being told to be quiet and adjust to DOE decisions. But the teachers don't  like this setup with all the school-power being in the hands of a few DOE officials. This is the basic issue in the strike: who controls the schools.\\nThe concentration of power makes things  lousy for us students too. Therefore we have some common interests with the teachers  and should support their strike.\\nHOW CAN WE SUPPORT THE STRIKE?\\nWe should support the strike, first by not going to school. Simple enough.\\nThe second way is to elaborate the teachers' demands. We know about the rotten\\nconditions in the schools and have ideas about improving them. For example:\\n- Get rid of all mandatory classes.  18 credits should be enough for graduation.\\n- No more mandatory class attendance.\\n- Students should participate in planning classes.\\n- Get rid of the smoking-ban and establish a smoking lounge.\\n- Either reduce the school week to 4 days or shorten the school day.\\nWe can show that we care about these points by forming our own picket line in support of the teachers.
