This was made possible through the efforts of our Old Vineyard Street Residents Association (OVRA) president, Esther Lewis. Attorney Clayton Ikei, Eric Chock, and Ethnic Studies students from the UH have been giving their invaluable legal and friendly services to the association. We began planning some positive actions for our community and one of them was to beautify our living place. With the \"We Care\" attitude, the clean up day started with the Makai Vineyard Street section at 9 a.m. on April 14. About seventeen enthusiastic students joined the Mauka, Makai, and Punchbowl residents, raking, pulling weeds, cut-FOR REPAIR PICTURESBY SUMIYO HOSHINO ting grass, picking up old bulky junks such as televisions, mattresses, broken chairs, carpets and many other items. Mr. Nakamu-ra, a jack of all trades, and several other residents repaired the damaged steps of four homes.A pile of useable lumber was brought in through the cooperative efforts of some residents. Mr. Me-deiros used his permit to pick up the lumber needed for repairs from the lumber yard; Alvin Tringali loaned his van for the lumber; and several residents helped select and load the lumber into the van. Esther Lewis, Maka Cravalho, Violet DeLima, and few others went to the lumber yard on two mornings, before sunrise. At noon, everyone had lunch prepared by the residents. There was a variation of dishes. It was a wonderful lunch enjoyed by all. After lunch, old bulky junks were loaded in a borrowed van and disposed of at a dump._________________________________________________________________PAGE 2MAY 10, 1973PUNCHBOWLOn Thursday, May 3, members of our OVRA steering committee, a-long with some students, handed out leaflets and talked with our neighbors who live in the Punchbowl Triangle.According to the same Capitol District Master Plan that shows our homes as a parking garage, the area between Punchbowl and Miller Streets is supposed to become a part of the \"Capitol Mall.\" What the plan calls for is to close off these two streets and plant grass and trees in the area where people are living. (They face the same things we have gone through since last December; and as we know, it is almost impossible to find cheap, good housing in Honolulu). The Department of Accounting and General Services (DAGS) is now in the process of condemning the triangle, so that the owner will have to sell the land.REPAIRS, CONT, FROM PAGE 2The job of cleaning the drive way, yards, and repairing the steps were well done by all those who participated. However, special thanks go to the 17 students who sacrificed their Saturday to make our place beautiful, sanitary and safe to live.Again, on the mornings of April 21 and 28, students came to help clean up the Punchbowl and Mauka sections of Old Vineyard St. They cleaned the yards and disposed the junks which had accumulated during the weeks. Many hands make work lighter and enjoyable. This is an experience those who work side by side with people appreciate. We talked with Mr. Yamada, landlord of several houses in the triangle and found that the State had already notified him about selling his land. Mr. Yamada refused the offer and said he liked living in that area. With Mr. Yamada 's assistance, we talked to several residents of the area and told them about our association, meetings which we held with State officials, our association parties and other activities. Three residents from the triangle, Mr. & Ms. Lewis Vargas, and Ms. Becky Walker attended our steering meeting that night after the leafletting. We hope that more people from the Punchbowl Triangle will attend our Thursday night meetings, as we always welcome new faces and friends. It is important that we join together with our Punchbowl Triangle neighbors who soon may face the same problems that we do ....in our unity we find strength.Domingo cleaning up_________________________________________________________________The Ethnic Studies Program at the University of Hawaii is now facing a critical situation. The University has not made any commitment to the Ethnic Studies Program on whether or not the program will remain next semester. The situation Ethnic Studies is facing is critical because the Legislature has cut the University budget. These huge cuts in the University budget will probably kill the Ethnic Studies Program, as well as a number of other programs on campus. Two of the main goals of Ethnic Studies are: 1) to help Hawaii's people in their communities and 2) to teach our people about Hawaii's true history. On Wednesday night, May 2nd, the Ethnic Studies staff and students met with various representatives from different communities at Palama Settlement. At the meeting, representatives frcm Salt Lake, Ota Camp, Waimanalo, Census Tract 57, and our Old Vineyard St. Residents' Association, among o-thers, discussed ways in which the communities could support and help the program. Old Vineyard was represented by our president, Esther Lewis, Violet DeLima, and Mrs. Tringali. All the representatives agreed to take the suggestions which were discussed that night back to their communities. At the meeting, the communities gave a feeling of strong support for the Ethnic Studies Program in their struggle to remain at the University._________________________________________________________________The association's steering committee got together to plan a dinner party for the students who has been helping our community since the beginning of February. We all put our hearts into this party and we had some responsibilities to follow up on. The women cooked all day while the men set up the tent in the Halehala parking lot on Saturday, April 21. E-veryone in Old Vineyard was invited to this dinner party which started at 4 pm that evening. Chinatown and Ota Camp people came as our guests. The party which lasted over ten hours, was a rallying success. The talented residents of Old Vineyard and Chinatown entertained us throughout the night. One such entertainment was Violet DeLima dancing to the music of Johnny and Esther Lewis, Martha Jury, and Ma-ka Cravalho while everyone had their attention on her movements. There was much joy and laughter as the singing and dancing continued. Everyone there truly enjoyed themselves.Later in the evening, we presented a huge cake to the students to express our gratitude and appreciation for their help and support.Everyone left the party with a good feeling. The cooks went home with empty pots, the residents became more acquaintant with their neighbors, and everyone left with contented stomachs. Much thanks go to the residents who worked and gave monetary contributions to the party to make it such a success._________________________________________________________________Third Arm in Chinatown held a fund - raiser block party on April 28. Pauahi Street was turned into a community mall from Maunakea to River Streets with the banner, \"Basic Needs No Mo ' Kukui Weeds\" strung across the street setting the mood for the night. There was food, entertainment, displays, and hundreds of people. Charlie Miner, spokesman for Third Arm and ex-mess sargeant, worked with Third Arm members to cook o-ver 100 gallons of stew. The e-vening was kicked off with Minerva Agnelli, Ambrocio Sabogo, and Charlie doing Manuela Boy. After them came Hawaiian music, lion dance and martial arts, and Fili-pino music and dance. On both sides of the street were displays put up by different Third Arm committees; the workers co-op, the youth recreation group, the urban renewal committee, and the newspaper committee. The health clinic films were very popular as many people gathered to watch acupuncture operations in China. As a money making project, the party was a success with over $1400 raised to continue Chinatown's fight to make the government more responsive to the needs of the community. But more important in the long run was that the block party showed what could be done when people got together for a common cause. Chinatown does not stand alone. People from Wai-manalo, Ota camp, Old Vineyard, Census Tract 57, and many others were there to help Chinatown celebrate and as the good time came to an end, shouts of \"Basic Needs No Mo' Kukui Weeds\", \"Makibaka\", \"Hu-li\", and \"No Parking Garage is Going to Run us Over\" sounded out strong and united."}],"sequences":[{"@id":"https://digital.library.manoa.hawaii.edu/iiif/31283/sequence/normal","@type":"sc:Sequence","label":"Current Page
