People all over Hawaii, and many in Japan, supported the farmers and opposed Nakade's golf course. He then sent a letter to the Higa's saying the eviction was cancelled \"due to public opposition.\" It was a peoples' victory! Partly due to stress from the eviction fight, to age and health, the Higa's retired. The farm is now idle and covered with weeds.\\n\\nWe talked with Nakade's local lawyer. Here's what he said: \"Mr. Nakade owns the land and will do anything he wants with it!\"\\n\\nWell, b.s.  --  Mr. \"hotshot\" lawyer!   Your Japan moneybag didn't write Hawaii's laws and neither did you!  The Hawaii State Constitution says:\\n'The State shall conserve and protect agricultural lands, promote diversified agriculture, increase agricultural self-sufficiency and assure the availability of agriculturally suitable lands.\"\\n\\nThe Higa's produced fresh vegetables for Hawaii's people. They were distributed through two large food chains. In their public statements, the Higa's always said that when they retire, younger farmers must continue food production on this farm to help keep prices down for local consumers.\\n\\nPetitions are now going around demanding that instead of an exclusive Japan millionaires' golf course on the Higa prime farmland, the land be leased to local farmers to provide food for our people and livelihood for our farmers! Meanwhile, Nakade is drilling for scarce O'ahu water -- not for food -- but for one of 12 golf courses planned in Wai'anae! Plan was dropped. Next plan would have raised rates by 66%  --  also dropped due to public protest. No rate increases for two more years. Mayor-appointed board members connected with developers and bankers were trying to use water rates to evict farmers for urban developments.\\n\\n1988 JACINTO EVICTION STOPPED Attempt by a small landowner to evict the Lualualei Jacinto tenant farm family for a possible Horita urban land purchase was exposed and defeated. Neighbors, activists and friends helped unite the community, renovate the Jacinto's house, publicize the issues and even won in court.\\n\\n1988 HIGA FARM Strong farmer and statewide public support won the fight against Nakade's attempt to evict the Higa's. This drew international publicity in U.S., Japan, France, Canada and more! Key theme was\" NO CAN EAT GOLF BALLS!\"\\n\\n1988 MA'ILI KAI Kaiser Corp. had plans for a 415-acre urban complex with golf course in Ma'ili.  It proposed housing for upper income West Beach Resort employees.  Japan photographers and surveyors on the property indicated Kaiser was fronting for Japan money.  Kaiser denied this.  Public opposition reflected in the Waianae Neighborhood Board led to Kaiser withdrawing the application for city permits.\\n_________________________________________________________________\\n\\n\\nJAPAN LAND SPECULATORS OWN THIS MOUNTAIN\\nThis Heleakala Ridge separates Nanakuli from Lualualei. It was owned by H. Hioshi & wife in Tokyo along with Kazuhisa Abe, an Ariyoshi pal, and former member state supreme court, indicted for criminal conspiracy  and fraud. They planned a Japan sports complex here with golf courses. Sen. Aki's 15 acres controls access to the area. Looks like Sanjiro Nakade now owns over 1,000 acres of Lualualei Valley and the mountain, nearly twice the 642 acres of West Beach Resort!\\n\\nURBAN UPDATE\\n\\n1989 WATANAE KAI GOLF COURSES Herbert Horita and Shinwa Golf Co. of Kyoto, Japan, aimed to build three golf courses on 250 acres of Wai'anae Valley. They would have destroyed Mountain View Dairy whose 3O workers produce 15% of O'ahu's milk from 1,400 cows. Some area politicians favored the project for claims rejected by many Wai'anae residents, by the state and city. They included ground water pollution, loss of farms, milk production, urban congestion and other arguments. Local opposition was fierce. Horita withdrew his application. Shinwa pulled out of the hui. Fasi's temporary golf course ban also reflects the peoples strong opposition.\\n\\n1989 OHIKILOLO Japan firm Alpha Kai bought a portion of 2,000 acres there from McCandless Estate who had sold the Higa farm to Nakade. Then the Japan buyer learned some of the land didn't have clear title in haole books. It also had vital Hawaiian traditional \"shrines\" and unique archaeological remains of great cultural value. For us Wai'anae farmers and locals, our fight against Japan takeover began with victories!\\n\\nJapan land speculators now own this 7.5 acres of economically depressed Ma'ili between Maipalaoa Road and the drainage ditch. They plan 24 private dwelling units, plus a  tennis court, not to sell but to \"give to friends\" in Japan! Lot size will be between 7,000 and 12,000 square feet! The same engineering firm of H.
