Lam. was one of four finalists from more than 100 applicants when the law school voted on March 30 to cancel the search and re-advertise the position without interviewing any of the finalists. On April 8, Lam filed a grievance. She charged two things: racial, political and sexual discrimination and violations in the hiring procedure.* Lam holds a law degree from UH and graduate degrees in Anthropology and South East Asian studies from Yale. She has published on Vietnamese social change and Hawaiian land rights, has taught since 1974 and served as Assistant Director of the Law of the Sea Institute since 1983. She is fluent in Vietnamese, Thai and French, in addition to English.* However, Lam is a woman, Eurasian and politically active. We students feel that these factors were made an issue in her candidacy and therefore Lam has suffered discrimination.2 - The series of sexual harassment articles printed in Ka Leo over the past year and the more recently \"Voices\" article indicates how women experience powerlessness and frustration when having to confront the \"proper\" channels for harassment. Hence, the anonymous article in \"Voices\". Does this say something about the EEO/AA office being ineffective as an advocate for complainants of sexual harassment and discrimination?WHY SHOULD WE STUDENTS BE CONCERNED?The Lam case and the sexual harassment stories remind us of how urgently advocacy for women and minorities is needed. Under current structuring, the EEO/AA office wears two hats. The EEO/ AA officer is expected to represent both the complainant and the agency to which the complaint is made. We see this as a conflict of interest.* Many of us may someday encounter discriminatory hiring practices against us as minorities, or sexual harassment, and may want to file a grievance of one kind or another. Can we feel confident that our grievances will be handled in the best of our interests?* On a broader level, many of us recognize that a wrong has taken place (in the Lam case) and recognize that structural changes are needed so that the EEO/AA office can be a true advocate for women and minorities. Let's work together by organizing and making our voices heard!_________________________________________________________________HOW WE STUDENTS CAN GET INVOLVED* Familiarize yourself with the Lam case and the structural problems of the EEO/AA office (we have some literature) and share that knowledge.* Write letters to the editor supporting Lam's efforts for redress and/or your concern about the EEO/AA and it's conflicting role.* Sign our petition and help us organize.
