From back of print: Vice Admiral Smith New Commander of Service Force, Pacific Fleet: Vice Admiral William Ward Smith, United States Navy, (right) has assumed command of the Service Force, Pacific Fleet, relieving Vice Admiral William L. Calhoun, United States Navy, (left) as head of the vast auxiliary fleet of more than 700 ships which services the Pacific Fleet and advance bases, and which Admiral Calhoun developed ten-fold in a little more than four years. Admiral Smith participated in the battles of Coral Sea and Midway and in the bombardment of Kiska during a previous tour of duty in the Pacific area.
