Description
36 x 22 cm, Asia Collection, Gift of Dr. Marshall R. Pihl. When King Sejong (1397-1450) heard about a man who killed his father, he ordered his scholars to write a book on filial piety as a model for his people. In 1434 they compiled 330 stories gathered from Chinese and Korean texts that exemplify the three basic Confucian relationships: those between parents and children, king and subject, and husband and wife. Thus, it remains an important source for research on Confucian morality. This copy is a late 15th century revised edition with only 105 stories and the addition of Han'gŭl (Korean alphabet) texts.
