Description

In 18th century Europe collecting came to signify one's genteelness or refinement. Collecting shells became a popular fad. D'ezallier d'Argenville, an advisor to Louis XV, was a French naturalist. He introduced the term conchyliology and was one of the first to classify shells. The aesthetic arrangement of the shells in the illustrations, combined with the detail of the copperplate engravings by Jacques de Favanne and his son Jacques Guillaume, appealed to collectors and served as an important resource for scientists.
