Description

This elegantly illustrated and designed book by Benedictine monk and scholar, Arias Montanus, was a poetic commentary on the bible. Both Montanus and his publisher, Christophe Plantin, were affected by the religious ferment of the Protestant Revolt that split the Christian church. Montanus, who in 1562 attended the Council of Trent that was called to define the doctrines of the Catholic Church, was denounced for having altered the Latin bible by using Hebrew texts. Plantin, a Frenchman, fled to Antwerp because of religious persecution. He became the leading printer of the second half of the 16th century. The detail in this engraving of Luke in his study was rendered by Pierre van der Borcht, a painter and engraver whose speciality was everyday subjects.
