Caption: WASHINGTON, AUG.21--ANOTHER FIRST--Shortly after today's signing of the Hawaii statehood proclamation, the first patent application from the 50th state was filed in the U.S. Patent Office. Samuel Stearman, left, patent counsel for the Flintkote Co. subsidiary, the Patent and Licensing Corp., shows Daniel K. Inouye, Hawaii congressman-elect, a patent application for a new method to produce insulation board from bagasse, a waste byproduct of sugar production. It is the invention of Sung H. Cha of Hawaii, research and quality control director of Flintkote's Hilo plant.
