Description
貧しい裏長屋で暮らす与太郎、その養父・吉五郎、後妻お都賀の物語。吉五郎の横暴に耐えかねたお都賀は黒蜥蜴の毒で吉五郎を殺害し、自身も入水する。口絵は吉五郎をなだめる与太郎と、その後ろで産褥にあるお都賀。作中でお都賀は顔にあざのある醜い女性とされるが口絵にそれは反映されていない。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A story centers on Yotarō, his foster father Kichigorō, and stepmother Otsuga, living in a dilapidated back-alley house. Otsuga, unable to endure Kichigorō's tyranny, murders him with black lizard venom and then drowns herself.
Description of the kuchi-e: Yotarō appeasing Kichigorō, while Otsuga, recovering from childbirth, is seen behind them. Although Otsuga is described in the story as an ugly woman with bruises on her face, this detail is not reflected in the kuchi-e.
