関ヶ原の戦いが勃発する直前の時代を舞台とする。石田三成の臣・島勘左衛門は、舅が徳川家康の忠臣・上林竹庵であるがゆえに謀反を疑われ、その疑いを晴らすため自ら討ち死に覚悟で戦いの先陣を切る。口絵は勇敢に戦う島勘左衛門と左の丸枠にその妻の心配そうな姿。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): Set just before the outbreak of the Battle of Sekigahara, this is a story about the loyalty and bravery of Shima Kanzaemon, a retainer of Ishida Mitsunari. Shima is suspected of treason because his father-in-law, Uebayashi Chikuan, is a staunch supporter of Tokugawa Ieyasu. To clear his name, he leads the vanguard into battle, fully prepare to die.
