『報知新聞』に連載された新聞小説を単行本化したもの。「日の出島」とは日本（大日本帝国）を指し、資本家の娘・お富嬢の婿探しと科学者たちの発明の物語を中心として世紀転換期の近代化する日本を描く。高砂の巻はお糸の縁談、石橋学士の夫婦関係、お富嬢の旅が主に描かれる。口絵の男性は馨少年、女性はお富嬢と思われる。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A book compilation of a newspaper serial in the Hōchi Shinbun. "Hinodejima" (The Island of the Rising Sun) refers to Japan, or the Empire of Japan, and the story depicts the modernizing Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, centering on the search for a husband for Otomi, the daughter of a wealthy capitalist, and scientific inventions. This volume primarily depicts the marriage proposal for Oito, the marital relationship of the scholar Ishibashi, and the journey of Otomi.
Description of the kuchi-e: The male figure is Kaoru, and the female figure likely to be Otomi.
