無人島で暮らす荻野桂一が書いた草稿が著者(江見)に託された経緯を述べる前記と、明治の社会で恋も学問も成就せず南洋へ向かうまでの桂一の生涯がその草稿の内容として提示される本文で構成される枠小説。口絵右上は無人島で草稿を書く桂一、その左下の女性は桂一の叔母・お橋、従妹の藤子または梅子のいずれかと思われるが不明、ついたての絵は桂一が夢中になったという忠義水滸伝を描いたものか。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A frame story composed of a preface that describes how a manuscript written by Ogino Keiichi, who was living in a deserted island, was entrusted to the author (Emi). The main text details the life of Keiichi who failed in both love and academic pursuits and decided to migrate to the South Pacific.
Description of the kuchi-e: Keiichi writing a manuscript in a deserted island on top right; the woman on bottom left could be either his aunt, Okyō, or one of his cousins, Fujiko or Umeko. The painting on the folding screen may be of the the Chūgi Suikoden, which Keiichi was said to be obsessed with.
