Description

HIS SIGNATURE BUT NOT HIS LANGUAGE: Above is a photographic copy of a letter received from Hio Whoon Park by his mother, Mrs. Chun Soong Myeng, 1219 Keeaumoku St., Honolulu. Hio Whoon Park, who was at one time a Star-Bulletin carrier, went to Wake Island early in the fall of 1942 and was among the prisoners captured by the Japanese when Wake Island was finally stormed after heroic resistance. He is 19 years old, educated at McKinley High School and left high school to go to work. His mother is a widow and he has several brothers and sisters. The letter reproduced above is believed to have been prepared for him for proganganda purposes by Japanese prison camp authorities. The language is not the language which Hio Whoon Park ordinarily would use and is strikingly similiar to other letters from prisoners at this Shanghai camp, which have been received in Honolulu. The signature is genuine and this has rejoiced his mother and family, as it shows he is alive.
