About the Collection
Photo albums and scrapbooks from the early 20th century from the Hawaiian Rare collection have been scanned in order to create digital surrogates to reduce the amount of handling and light exposure of the original photographs. This is a collection of black and white and hand-colored photographs of scenic sites and identifiable landmarks in Hawaii, programs, tickets, etc. Scrapbook documents the summer trip of "Miss Rae Chadwick and Miss Norma Stewart, Weber county school teachers" who travelled on the S.S. Malolo to Hawaii in 1935. If captions or notes were available those have been used to "title" the photos. Descriptive titles were provided when no captions or notes were present. Each image is numbered [in brackets] so that browsing will simulate sequential paging through the album.
Digitization Procedures
Flatbed scanners such as Microtek and HP were used. Images were scanned in TIF format at 100% of original item size, 200 dpi, 16 million colors. Images were then resized and saved as grayscale (or color) JPG files.
