About the Collection

Photographs taken by Lt. Colonel Duckworth-Ford on an assignment to Hawaii regarding the labor conditions of Filipino laborers in Hawaii; they are described by Duckworth-Ford. The photographs show Filipino laborers and their relatives, fields and lands, water sources, plantation buildings, laborer housing and schools, store, hospital facility, labor officials. Also sugar cane planting and harvesting, cane processing equipment, cane transport.

Digitization Procedures

Photos and printed report were scanned in 8-bit 256 color grayscale at 400 dpi on a Microtek flatbed scanner. Abbyy Finereader was used to OCR and create a searchable PDF of the Report of the Director of Labor to His Excellency the Governor-General of the Philippine Islands, Adobe Acrobat 9.0 was used to OCR the Report on Hawaiian Sugar Plantations and Filipino Labor.
