From back of print: Officers and men of the 1st Hawaii Rifles move forward to receive meritorious service ribbons from Brigadier General Herbert D. Gibson at the regiment's final formation, Mooheau Park, Hilo, Hawaii, 4 July 1945, upon formal release of the Territory's Organized Defense Volunteers from military control. Leading the group honored is the regiment's commander, Colonel Andrew T. Spalding. As Lieutenant General Robert C. Richardson's representative (commanding Army Forces, Middle Pacific), the commanding general of the Replacement Training Command presented personally each officer and man with the orders recognizing his sacrifices in defending the Big Island from invasion and sabotage.
