Islamic School Textbooks
The Islamic boarding school textbooks in this collection were published in the 1960s and 70s in Southern Thailand, Northern Malaysia, and East Java (Indonesia). They reflect a unique convergence of regional Islamic educational traditions and the broader dynamics of that time. These texts, commonly used in traditional “pondok” and “pesantren” schools, focus on classical Islamic disciplines like Qur’anic studies, Tafsir (exegesis of the Qur’an), Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Hadith (teachings, sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad), and Sufism (mystical and spiritual tradition within Islam that seeks direct and personal experience of the divine).
The books are written in local languages using Arabic script, commonly known as Jawi or Gundhul. These books served not only as instructional materials but also as tools for preserving cultural identity and religious practice in various Muslim communities in Southeast Asia. They encapsulate a blend of indigenous scholarly insights and established Islamic texts.
