From back of print: Secretary Knox, Marine notables congratulate General Holcomb following medal award - Secretary of Navy Frank Knox congratulates General Thomas Holcomb, U.S. Marine Corps, with a firm handshake after awarding him the Distinguished Service Medal in the Secretary's office in Washington, D.C., on 12 April 1944, for his "exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service" as Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1 December 1936 to 1 January 1944. Looking on are Marine Commandant Lieutenant General Alexander A. Vandergrift, U.S. Marine Corps, (right), who succeeded General Holcomb, and Lieutenant Colonel James Roosevelt, U.S. Marine Corps, eldest son of the President. General Holcomb was recently appointed Minister to the Union of South Africa.
