Description
Nathaniel Wallich, a Dane, went to India as a surgeon to the Danish settlement at Serampore. When the British took Serampore in 1813, Wallich entered British service, first as part of its medical staff and then in 1815 as superintendent of the Botanical Garden in Calcutta. His zeal to discover previously unknown plants took him on explorations to Nepal, western Hindustan, and Burma.
