Title
Repair of the USS Maryland
Date
c. 1944-07
Format
Description
Twenty-five photographs in the Walden Collection highlight the repair of the USS Maryland in July and August 1944 following damage from a torpedo during battles in the Northern Mariana Islands. A flap of steel projected from the side of the ship as it arrived at Pearl Harbor on July 10. Most of the damage to the bow was below the waterline and was only visible once the ship was in drydock. Several photographs in the collection show the replacement bow being installed and the ship's departure on August 10, 1944.
The handwritten report by an unknown author documents the preparation in anticipation of the arrival of the damaged USS Maryland and the progress of its repairs which were completed 11 days ahead of schedule.
