Description
Originally published in Spanish in 1585, Gonzales de Mendoza's history of China quickly became a best-seller and his sympathetic treatment had an enormous influence on European perceptions of China. Gonzales de Mendoza, an Augustinian priest, was sent on an embassy to China by King Phillip II of Spain. Although the embassy only reached Mexico, there Gonzales de Mendoza found much material on China. By the end of the 16th century his work had been translated into all the major European languages and was reprinted 40 times.
