Besides the numerous natural disasters of the Ansei Period, the most widespread cholera epidemic ever recorded spread throughout Japan in 1858. It is estimated that more than one million people across the country died. Kanagaki recounts many aspects of this epidemic with colorful woodblock prints. One illustration shows the dead being cremated.
