Description

Hamilton Library holds various English and German editions of Hasegawa's "crepe paper books." Hasegawa, an ingenious publisher and entrepreneur, developed a unique mechanical process that transformed Japanese washi paper into a soft, silk-like texture. The popular books were hand-printed in vivid colors from wood blocks and published in English, German, French, Spanish, and Dutch. Well-known Japanologists and writers such as James Hepburn, Basil Hall Chamberlain, and Lafcadio Hearn were translators of the Japanese fairy tales.
