Admiral Yi Sun-sin was a man of loyalty, noble personality, and preeminent leadership. He was equally distinguished as a warrior and a literary man. His heroic exploits in the war against the Japanese invasion of Korea from 1592-1598 are legendary. As he was dying from a fatal injury sustained during the final battle with the retreating Japanese troops, his last words were, "do not announce my death during this furious battle." In recognition of his service the king conferred the posthumous title Ch'ungmu Kong (loyal warrior). A collection of his poems, letters, and other writings, including his diary of the seven-year war, was published in 14 volumes with one volume of preliminaries in 1795. It constitutes one of the most important publications of the Choson dynasty. The University of Hawai'i holds the preliminary volume that contains three royal messages and an inscription in honor of Yi Sun-sin written by King Chŏngjo. The famous "turtle ship" (illustration) is claimed to be the world's first ironclad battleship.
