Description
Lithograph, 36.5 x 24 cm. Daumier is recognized as one of the greatest political cartoonists and the first to develop lithography as an art form. Jean Charlot avidly collected Daumier's prints. He appreciated Daumier's technical abilities, the deftness of his imagery, and his humanitarian concerns. Here, as a traveler arrives at Chinese customs, he is "inspected, searched, undressed, and robbed." His clothes are not allowed in because "they were made in China;--his trunk, because it was not made there;--his boots, because leather is prohibited;--his clyso-pompe [pump], because it is a suspicious mechanical object. They seize everything and make him pay duties on all the rest; after that, he is free as the air."
