Description

This album of engravings by Virgil Solis provides insight into the struggle between the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestants. Solis' engravings were published in a Latin Catholic edition that included a printed "privilege" or permission from the Church, and a German vernacular for Martin Luther from which these images came. Solis was a student of Albrecht Durer. Although Solis and his workshops achieved fame for the quality and diversity of their prints, the indebtedness to Durer's small woodcut Passion is evident.
