Spanish Franciscan missionary Sebastian de Totanes joined a mission to Mexico in 1715 where he remained for two years before leaving for the Philippines. During the 27 years he lived in the Philippines he wrote Arte de la Lengva Tagala. It was published in 1745, a year after he returned to Spain. Its insights and approaches to the study of Tagalog grammar remained influential until the early 20th century.
