Description
Wood engraving, hand-colored using stencils. Charlot collected the popular Images d'Epinal (a town near Paris), especially the works of Francois Georgin, a master wood engraver of the first half of the 19th century. The Battle of the Pyramids celebrates one of the achievements of the Emperor Napoleon when, in 1798, French forces defeated the Muslims. This allowed Napoleon's victorious entry into Cairo. These prints, sold by peddlers to French peasants and townsfolk, helped to establish the Napoleonic legend among the French people.
