Description

James Bateman, an esteemed expert on the science and cultivation of orchids, never left the comforts of his estate in England to search for the beautiful orchids he was so passionate about. Instead he hired collectors to search the forests of Central America for all varieties which were shipped to England and grown in special greenhouses. Only 125 copies of this book were printed. Two women, Miss S. A. Drake and Mrs. Augusta Withers, were the primary artists for the drawings on which the lithographs were based. They traveled to various estates throughout England to sketch the orchids when they bloomed.
