Description

Beginning in the 16th century scholars, artists, and scientists studied the body to find answers to the mysteries of life. In theaters with medical students and artists observing from galleries surrounding the operating area, surgeons dissected the body. Early books on anatomy showed outer layer peeled away to illustrate the structure of the human form. Artists studied the books to understand how the bones and muscles functioned and incorporated these discoveries into their paintings and sculpture.
