Description
Although Europeans collected plants from Asia since the time of Alexander the Great, systematic botanical exploration commenced in the 17th century with the development of European trading posts. The 12 volumes of Horti Malabarici contain 791 copper engravings of plants collected by Reede tot Drakestein in Malabar from 1669-1677. He compiled information on the properties and the names of the plants, each of which is rendered on the plates in Latin, Arabic, Sanscrit, and Malayalam.
