Description
The artist William Hodges serves as a tangible link between the presence of the British in Polynesia and South Asia. Hodges accompanied Captain Cook on his second voyage in 1772. Eight years later, between 1780 and 1784, Hodges traveled to India as an artist for the British East India Company. He is considered the first European artist to depict the scenic splendor of India and portray the common people.
