Description
Dated August 30, 1853, and signed “Kamehameha,” this “patent” is in fact a kuleana land title, which notes that a plot of land has been granted to Akoni, listing the number of the grant (“Kuleana Helu 2944 B) and noting also that it is an “Alodio”—i.e. fee-simple—piece of land. Also included on the reverse side is map of the land parcel.
This document is significant because it shows one of grants undertaken as part of the 1848 Mahele, the process of land division begun during Kamehameha III’s reign that marked the move away from traditional ahupua’a stewardship and into the era of private land ownership in the Islands.
