Studies conducted by the German South Sea Expedition (1908-1910) in Melanesia and Micronesia were published in 13 volumes, 30 parts between 1914 and 1954. They are of critical importance for their information on material culture, social structure, language, legends, songs, genealogies, and geography. Close examination of the detailed drawings reveals the legends, lore, and history of Palau as depicted on the facade of the bai, the traditional meeting house where clan chiefs congregated to discuss important matters affecting their community.
