Five figures in a canoe on high waves. Two men hold onto a long pole while a young boy, perched on the end, points to an erupting volcano in the distance. Dark brown ink on white paper. Titled, signed, and dated in pencil below the image.
"The ... image entitled 'Discovery' was made in response to Herb Kane's recent color poster entitled 'The Discovery of Hawaiʻi'. ... Recently we've been seeing some films on the ETV channel dealing with long ocean voyages retracing possible migratory routes. Often children (young boys) are used as crew members because they eat less, work harder, are more readily available (perhaps also expendable). ... Anyway, there never was 'the discovery' -- there were many discoveries, some (most) of which went unrecorded and the discoverers probably died there. Never to tell of what they had found." — Varez
