『報知新聞』に連載された新聞小説を単行本化したもの。「日の出島」とは日本（大日本帝国）を指し、資本家の娘・お富嬢の婿探しと科学者たちの発明の物語を中心として世紀転換期の近代化する日本を描く。住之江巻は雲岳女史の結婚と太陽燈の発明について。口絵は母親と嫁入り支度をする雲岳女史。 /

This volume is about Ms. Ungaku's marriage and the invention of solar lamp.
