アメリカへ行き一旗挙げて日本に戻った梅吉だが、帰ってみると父は孤独のうちに亡くなり、許嫁だったお千代は他所へ嫁いだことを知り、梅吉は酒に依存するようになり路上で行き倒れて死ぬ。口絵は酔いつぶれる梅吉と、彼を心配するお千代とが描かれる。二人の立場、状況、時間の差異が異時同画法で表現されている。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A story of Umekichi who returned to Japan after making his fortune in America only to find his father died alone and his fiancée, Ochiyo, had married another man. Umekichi becomes dependent on alcohol and dies on the street.
Description of the kuchi-e: A drunk Umekichi and a concerned Ochiyo. By using a method of capturing events in different times within a frame, it represents their chasm in position, time and circumstance.
