『報知新聞』に連載された新聞小説を単行本化したもの。「日の出島」とは日本（大日本帝国）を指し、資本家の娘・お富嬢の婿探しと科学者たちの発明の物語を中心として世紀転換期の近代化する日本を描く。老松の巻はお富嬢への縁談と馨少年の恋愛について。口絵の左奥は夜中にお富の家を覗く馨少年、右手前の平安貴族と思しき人物の詳細と小説との関連は不明。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A book compilation of a newspaper serial in the Hōchi Shinbun. "Hinodejima" (The Island of the Rising Sun) refers to Japan, or the Empire of Japan, and the story depicts the modernizing Japan at the turn of the twentieth century, centering on the search for a husband for Otomi, the daughter of a wealthy capitalist, and scientific inventions. This volume focuses on marriage proposals for Otomi and the love story of Kaoru.
