Hawaiian Music Collection - Kalama, Benjamin Kapena: Performer Biography

Benjamin Kapena Kalama was born on June 29, 1916 on the Big Island, HI. A Hawaiian falsetto singer, "Benny" Kalama was also an arranger, composer, musician and recording artist. In the 1960s he replaced host Al Perry as the musical director of the "Hawaii Calls" Radio program and was director for 22 years. Benny was also the musical director for fellow musician Alfred Apaka at Hawaiian Village and has been credited for discovering Apaka when he was a student. Benny was inducted into the Hawaiian Entertainment Hall of Fame in 1974. His albums include Around the Islands In 80 Shakes, Somewhere in Hawaii Ed Kennedy Sings as well as being the musical conductor-arranger for such well known Hawaiian artists including Hilo Hattie, Haunani Kahalewai and Alfred Apaka. Benny passed away in 1999 at the age of 83.
