CNMI
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Fourteen islands, including Saipan, Tinian and Rota, existing as a commonwealth in political union with the US. During the time these images were made, the islands, along with Guam, comprised the Mariana Islands District of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
COMMAR
"Commander Marianas." Short for "Commander Naval Forces Marianas" (also sometimes abbreviated as COMNAVMAR). Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, was the highest ranking officer on Guam during the period of U.S. military rule (1944-1946). He established his headquarters on the Fonte Plateau, which became known as ComMar Hill, and is now known as Nimitz Hill.

Mariana Islands. At the time that these photographs and captions were made Guam, the southernmost island in the Mariana archipelago, was also politically a part of the Mariana Islands -- and hence Margo Duggan often appends "M.I." to Guam in her captioning. On June 1, 1950, Guam became an unincorporated territory of the United States, while the northern islands became a United States Commonwealth (i.e., the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or CNMI) on November 4, 1986.
