Full title: Chinese thoughts, translated from Manchurian to Russian by Collegium of Foreign Affairs Secretary Aleksei Leont'ev Leont'ev was a translator of Chinese and Manchurian languages. Educated at the Zaikonospassky Academy [a men's monastery in Moscow], he continued his language studies by living for ten years (1742 to 1752) in Peking with Major Mikhail L'vovich Shokurov, a courier. Next Leont'ev was named a translator to the Collegium of Foreign
Affairs. In 1767 he again went to Peking as secretary to Colonel Kropotov. He died in
St. Petersburg. Leont'ev was the author of more than seven books on China. Leont'ev writes on the verso of the title page:
"To the curious reader: this collection of my translations consists of the moral
admonitions of one Manchu Han [Emperor Yongzheng], and includes many learned
Chinese opinions and discourses ... the majority of which are in use by the people and the State." This book must have been popular in its day, as it had two editions, and a correction to the second edition.
