This little booklet contains stories translated from German by Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Fedorov-Davydov (1875-1936), who was a children's writer, editor, and publisher. He wrote over 125 books for children. He also translated the tales of Grimm and Andersen, and was the editor of the childrens' journals "Ogonek", "Svetliachok", "Putevodnyi ogonek," and "Delo i potekha." This collection of Japanese folk tales must have been very popular, as it had four editions. The stories selected are as follows: The crab and the monkey, The sparrow with a cut-off tongue, The man who made flowers bloom in a dead village, Momotarō—the peach boy, The gravel-maker, The betwitched princess, The wild teapot, The boy warrior Kin-Tarō, Japanese children, and The firefly.
