De Rhodes, a Jesuit missionary, made two missions to Cochinchina (southern Vietnam) and one to Tonkin (northern Vietnam). His book recounts his efforts to convert the Vietnamese to Catholicism and the troubled period in Vietnamese history in the first half of the 17th century when rival clans, the Trinh in the north and the Nguyen in the south, engaged in almost continuous warfare.
