Description

The Charlot Collection contains a brown paper pouncing stencil for the head of the figure of Song, who sits with Dance, Music, and Comedy on the lower left side of Diego Rivera's mural Creation at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (National Preparatory School) in Mexico City. Rivera painted his first mural in 1922-1923 using encaustic and gold leaf, a very labor-intensive technique. Charlot and other artists assisted him on the project. Charcoal would have been pounced through the stencil holes in transferring the full-scale drawing to the wall.
