Description
The Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) began when Japan launched a surprise attack on Russian warships anchored in Port Arthur. The unsuccessful and unpopular war was a prelude to Japanese victories on land and sea. Japan's war cabinet declared war on February 4, 1904; during the night of February 7-8 the Japanese fleet surprised and crippled several parts of the Russian fleet anchored off Port Arthur. The following afternoon the Japanese sank two Russian cruisers. This print depicts a Japanese torpedo boat attacking a Russian warship at the entrance of Port Arthur probably at the opening of hostilities.
