江戸末期に起きた尊王攘夷派による天誅組の変の前日譚。幕府側から間者になることを強いられ最後には出家する女性・小萩を中心に、画師の藤本鐵石や小萩の許婚・乾宰十郎ら天誅組の志士を描く。口絵は藤本の信用を得るためあえて捕まった乾の姿と、紙のめくれによって隔てられた枠内に小萩。 /
Description of the associated story (see Is Part Of): A prequel to the Tenchūgumi Incident, a rebellion by the sonnō jōi loyalists at the close of the Edo period. It centers on a woman named Kohagi, who is forced by the shōgunate to become a spy and eventually becomes a nun. It also depicts the Tenchūgumi patriots, including the artist Fujimoto Tesseki and Kohagi's fiancé, Inui Saijūrō.
Description of the kuchi-e: Inui who deliberately gets himself captured to earn Fujimoto's trust, and Kohagi in a frame separated by a flip of paper.
